A scatter plot, also called an "XY Chart," shows the relationship between two variables. For Salem data, it plots the number of executions that occurred each month. Like histograms, scatter plots makes visually apparent the pattern of executions during the Salem outbreak.
Similar to the accusations scatter plot, import the Execution Scatter Plot Data Set into Excel or another program. (The data can also be taken from the "Frequency" and "Bin" [Month] cells in the execution histogram chart. Alternatively, construct a Pivot Table — or cross tab table — using the Accused Witches or Accused Histogram data sets.)
The Execution Scatter Plot Data Set consists of two columns (variables):
- "Month of Year" numerically expresses the period from January 1692 (1) to January 1693 (13).
- "Number of Accusations" records the number of accusations made during each month of the Salem outbreak. It excludes cases where the month of accusation is unknown (-1).
In an Excel worksheet, either select "Chart" from the Insert Menu or select the Chart Wizard. Choose "XY (Scatter)" and the sub-type "Scatter with data points connected by lines." Click "Next." For "Data Range" make sure that both columns of data are selected and select the "Columns" button. Click "Next." Use "Chart Options" to edit the chart. Click "Next" when completed. Select the location for the chart, and click "Finish."
